Global and local perspectives
Currently Australia, like most countries around the world, is facing increasing population, shortage of resources and the effects of climate changes.
Population growth is affecting the agricultural industry as farmlands close to cities and towns are developed for housing which decreases the land availability for agricultural purposes.
As the population grows there is more demand for food which puts pressure on the availability of resources used in farming operations.
Climate change is seeing farmers face challenges that affect the ability to produce crops and the overall food productions.
Some factors include:
- Increased temperatures that can lead to heat stress of crops and livestock.
- Changes in rainfall patterns where some regions are experiencing more intense and frequent rainfall whilst other areas are experiencing drought.
- Reduced water availability in some regions due to drought and increased temperatures which leads to evaporation.
- Extreme weather events such as cyclones, floods, droughts and storms can lead to damage of crops and livestock and disrupt supply chains.
Industry trends
Industry trends are how the agricultural sector as whole respond to challenges they face. As we have already explored farmers are using technology to help them overcome some of these challenges leading to them to being more productive in their operations.
Some current trends in agriculture include:
- precision agriculture
- digital farming platforms
- robotics and automation
- water efficiency technologies.
